What is a worry to you looks wonderful to us. This is a lovely picture and noise is a bane of life.

What strikes me about this is the line the lava makes, separating LIFE from DEATH. Very poignant mate.

Beautiful - the red against the black. Bit, I'd be scared to stand there - what's under all the black lava? Will it suddenly start moving? I've heard volcanologists tend to have a rather short life span. I've followed your volcanic photo series. I'm amazed att your daringness. Nice shot. I was thinking about your lava bed shots recently with the story of the house being engulfed by lava on all the news stations. Went back and browsed your gallery.

@Jay...No worries here unless it was heading towards my home :) You do need to take caution in the vegetation area as methane gas explosions or fires can occur. I have been caught in methane gas explosions before, a scary helpless feeling at that time. Be careful in the toxin fumes too as two hikers in the year 2000 ignored warning signs and lost their lives for it, I do carry a gas mask. @John...Did not get to close to the leading edge of the lava flow but I may on my next hike as I'm taking some friends. @T.Rex...In this flow, you can see that the newer flow is a lighter color as compared to the older flow (dark). The newer flow will definitely be hot. And whats under the darker a'a lava? More than likely layers of older lava over more older lava. Sometimes lava may enter a older lava tube again and travel under the old flow. There is always that possibility that it could move that old flow from underneath. Vulcanologist short span of life? I'm glad I'm not an vulcanologist :)

Wonderful view and your explanation above really sheds light on the whole business of hiking around flowing lava. Great stuff...you are our 'National Geographic' photographer in Hawaii:)

Fascinating shot. We have lots of interesting remnants of historic volcanic activity here in southern Oregon, but nothing active. Would love to see some flowing lava in person some day (at a safe distance, of course). A friend & I are thinking about a trip to Hawaii later this year - can you suggest some places to go where we might see this kind of activity?
