Description
...this was our campground in early May near Crescent City, California. It was nestled under a canopy of soaring spruce, hemlock, Douglas fir and Redwoods --- the world's tallest trees.
...most of the old growth trees (but thankfully not all) were logged for lumber in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The lumber was used to build homes and businesses along the recently opened and rapidly developing West Coast of California, Oregon and Washington.
...today, 100 or more years later, these logged areas are covered with very tall second growth trees.
...the campground above was filled with reminders of the old growth forest in the forms of huge stumps among the newer growth.
...each one of these stumps towers 10-11 feet in the air. Most still have the notches where lumberjacks inserted the ends of boards to stand on as platforms while wielding two-man cross-cut saws to saw down the old giants.
...there is a haunting majesty being among all these reminders of the past. The lush greenery is everywhere...giving me a chill up my spine when I ventured out with the dog in that silent but dripping wet and exceedingly dark night in the forrest.
...today conservation and carefully monitored reforestation programs rule...such was not the case in the boom times 100-150 years ago.

A beautiful set of pics Bill. In case you didn't know the reason that the big firs have soft bark is that they originate from rain forests where lightning is a hazard to them being so tall, so nature gave them this soft bark so that in the event of a lightning strike the bark would shatter off and leave the tree unscathed!
wonderful capture !! i like these trees !!
How very exciting! It looks so magical, and even dwarfs that monsterous vehicle!
How the mighty have fallen. Think how they survived for a thousand years, then were whacked down by man. Ouch!!! The images are sad, but so interesting...and well done, too. I like the collage way of presenting them.
Wonderful collage, Bill
They're so beautiful, and looks like they're sprouting? Or is that seedlings that have fallen and are now growing on them? Wonderful greens and a great collage!
Wonderful collage! What a great place to spend some time. Well done.
Wonderful shots of these great tree stumps!
fantastic
ccol greenery shots and interesting info
Great composition and collage.
beau collage!
Beautiful collage!! Thanks for the information.
Beautiful. Like being in a cathedral where the roof is so high it seems to not exist. Sadly, the redwoods became an "in thing" in the orient. Some 20 years ago there was quite a row about a logging company that had been purchased by an oriental company just to cut down redwoods to build houses with as the latest prestige thingy. I'm sure glad they were stopped from logging our redwood preserves. I love these photos - stumps, ot whole trees. So awe inspiring and majestic! :-)
What a great collection of photographs from that amazing place! (I believe it was the Redwoods RV Resort, btw.) I'm glad you put this together. VERY nicely done!
Wonderful places and timbers and certainly majestic!

So very familiar--the redwoods are simply majestic!!
OH WOOOOW!! They are so HUGE and beautiful and also the stumps are beautiful and so full of mosses and other plants. Amazing collage here, Bill. Amazing.
Wow these stumps are HUGE compared to the trees growing along side them, can imagine how the lumberjacks must of thought what a gold mine of wood.. Great captures Bill thanks for sharing these!!
I love all that growth out of the old stumps. Well done Bill on a nice presentation.
Great image Hugs Susan~
Looking at these photos, I couldn't help but think of Fangorn Forest in Lord of the Rings. This is just majestic! It boggles the mind to think of stumps 10 feet high. It must be an incredible experience to walk among these trees! Super collage and photos, Bill!
Deep lush greenery dominates this stellar collage of arboreal wonders, both old and new, Bill. Excellent historical narrative also in this posting.
Wonderful collage of this marvelous place. Almost like being in a cathedral.
