Description
The U.S.S. OLYMPIA at Penn's Landing, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The U.S.S. Olympia was launched in 1892 and is the oldest steel warship afloat today.
She served as Commodore George Dewey's flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay in the Philippines during the Spanish American War.
Over the next two decades, the U.S.S. Olympia, though a warship, was often used as a visible reminder of President Teddy Roosevelt's gunboat diplomacy. 'Walk softly and carry a big stick.'
After World War I (1914-1918) Olympia was selected in 1921 to bring the remains of the Unknown Soldier home from Le Havre, France for burial in Arlington National Cemetery. Her last official assignment was as a midshipmen's training ship at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland.
U.S.S. Olympia was decommissioned in December 1922.
This picture was taken on 6 June 2011.

What an amazing sight! Thanks for the info ... it adds immeasurably to my experience! Great presentation. Hard to believe that ship is 120 years old. Wow. It looks quite modern! Hope you're enjoying your trip, my friend!

excellent capture and info! Welcome back!
Excellent capture.
Glad to see you back Sig! Stunning capture :)
Great to see. and also to see you back.. :)
Wow this is great. The last I heard, they were closing it to the public due to a lack of funds for vital repairs. But I think that decision may still be 'on hold' as far as I know! Anywazzz its a great photo.
Great capture and history. Thanks for sharing.
wonderful to see them side by side
Wonderful capture and great history lesson
Fabulous capture she sure looks pretty modern for an old girl, great to see she is still around!
She looks pretty good at first glance, but at the water line she is falling apart. She needs major restoration which is not cheap and she may be closed to the public in the future if funding cannot be made available.
Cool capture of History Sig!
Great image!!
We should be thankful it didn't become an artificial reef somewhere, thanks, its good to see an old pre-dreadnouight hanging on.
great foto, those were the days, just build an ironclad and you could rule the world, how difficult it has become nowadays with the advent of computers and the internet.
very nice shot
AWesome ship!!!!!
MARVELOUS IMAGE
I better hurry up and get there to see it:) Great shot. Suspect she'll need to be pulled out of the water one of these days and placed in a dry display. Big $$$, I know.
Super shot of this trio Sig! The U.S.S. Olympia is full of Naval history. Nice to see the U.S.S. Becuna moored in there and the four-masted barque Moshulu, in the background. Wonderful POV. Dana
Love this old boat !
