Description
Can you imagine 1,840-1,680 million years ago?
Or 1,200-740 million years ago?
Or 525-505 million years ago?
Or, or, or...
How about a mere 5-6 million years ago when the erosion of the Grand Canyon began?
The numerous layers of different colored rock seen slice by slice as the Colorado River carves a one mile (1.6km) deep canyon reflects time as we can barely understand it...but it is right there for all to see.
Gives one pause to think about the shortness of a human lifetime compared to that of the earth upon which we stand.
Bill
P.S. Time of the day matters a great deal at Grand Canyon. This was taken about 3pm in the afternoon. Next time we'll stay overnight and go for sunrises and sunsets.

We are not even a blip on the radar of time Great capture
Great image of The Grand Canyon.
When I last stood there I thought of this a lot!
Lovely Bill. I enjoy a program called 'Time Team' where they dig for evidence of past civilizations etc. I'm always amazed at how much 'top soil' each generation adds to the mix.
Interesting that the thin caprock in this small promontory can support the junipers. My first reaction to the image was "Masada" in small scale. Good pic, Bill.
Really awesome Bill, I hope to see some views of this myself next week.
Another great pic which I can 'understand'.
Great shot Bill, love how those tree grow there on what looks like rock!!
Carn't even begin to envisage that time span. Wonderful capture!!!
"Late for an appointment" totally loses meaning. Excellent capture and musings!
You've summed it up perfectly, it just beggars belief, a truly awsome vista, what more can one say.......
Just............WHOA! Beyond words! A Fave Bill.. Thanks, Rob
Fantastic scene; it does make you think!
Well done, bill.
Yeah, one gets humble watching such a fantastic sight. This is such a beautiful shot. WOW !
Great capture. Well done
sublime pamorama!
excellent
beautiful!
A GREAT IMAGE, A FANTASTIC COMPOSITION!
Not only can I not imagine 1,840-1,680 million years ago, I can hardly remember living during World War II. Or even where I put my TV remote last night. A magnificent display in this pic of the rock clarity, lighting and textures, contrasted against the mighty depth and colors of the distant portion of the Canyon, Bill. And, incidentally, before the Big Bang, there was no such thing as Time.
A wonderful outcrop in the Grand Canyon with a superb bg. Time means nothing when you are on holiday, just enjoy it. Excellent capture.
It's just incomprehensible, Bill! At least it boggles what's left of my mind. The beauty of this place is also far beyond what any words can express. I've seen it once, and it's a memory that will stay with me always. I hope to get back there someday, now that I have a decent camera! LOL! Fantastic capture, my friend!
Very beautiful shot. It does kind of remind us how small and temporary we are, but also serves a different notice to me: everything changes, at its own rate, in its own way, and we're a part of that change. Fascinating photo!
mere dots in the universe--that's what this makes me think of. sure puts things in perspective!!
This is just totally AWESOME Love all the colors of the rocks........ and wow what a view....I can't find the word I want to really say.... Just that has been there for thousands of years, and we are here only for a short time........ Like beachzz this makes me want to put things in perspective....... A fav with me Hugs Susan~
Speechless!
It is amazing what water will do to rock in 5 or 6 million years.Awesome view.
Beautiful image! I love the brightness and sharpness of the foreground against the canyon, and the haphazard look of the rocks, like a child's blocks ready to tumble. I'm hopeless at even the more manageable fractions of time. Millions of years? Forget about it.
