Description
Wow, yesterday's Pop Art #1 (Soft Saxophone, Scale B), by Claes Oldenburg, really stirred up a hornets nest among all of you who commented. AND THIS IS AS IT SHOULD BE. But for my part, my favorite art teacher loves the work of Claes Oldenburg:)
So, now art lovers, here are two of four 18 foot, 5,500 pound Shuttlecocks done by husband-and-wife team Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen for the beautiful but extremely static Neo-Classical building and formal lawns/gardens of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City).
And this is Pop Art too. The artists' intent was to lighten up the atmosphere...to draw the public to the Nelson and into discussing art...and to diminish old elitist attitudes about what art is supposed to be.
The shuttlecocks created a firestorm back in the early 1990s among Kansas City residents...today, 16 years after their installation, residents are very proud of them. Wedding parties, graduation parties and lots of proud parents with new babies come to the Nelson to have their pictures taken with these iconic works of art. This continues to translate into, "Let's go inside and see what's in there!"
Success for the museum, the artists and the people of Kansas City!!
Think you'll like a ZOOM...

Incredible works and a great capture!!!
Very interesting work! Now these I can understnad and appreciate. the only ting missing are the rackets
Interesting art. But I'd rather see Chihuly art.
These look wonderful Bill can see why people would want their photos taken with them, Super capture well done...
WOW!!! I was looking for wires but at 18 feet and 5,500 pounds, I guess they have to be on the ground. Very sharp capture with fine details in the feathers. Dana
Now, see.... I've always just loved those shuttlecocks. I remember when they first put those in there was a lot of controversy, but after folks got used to them, they really became popular - as you said. I think I might have a couple model photos - somewhere - with a couple of them as backdrops. Yeah, gotta love the shuttlecocks! And I love the way you've framed them with the trees. Excellent!
Fantastic work!!
Terrific clarity and detail in this shot of the anomalous shuttlecocks, precariously balanced out on the field. They really stand out amidst all the relatively dark greenery. But, 5,500 pounds? Must be made out of lead.
fun to play the smiles come around wonderful colors warm hugs, Linda
now that a big birdy there. cool image of pop art. for some reason i can see one of these landing in a can of soup
Amazing. Fantastic capture!!!

That looks so sureal. Excellent composition Bill. :)
amusant,bonne photo!!
I think it would of been fun to of heard the original concepts and presentations. It would take a vison but also a bit of sales to show how giant shuttlecocks would prove interesting and be a great call of interest. Great capture - framing with the trees and very clear.
Yes, these are really cool, and you've gotten a great POV & shot!
No! Over priced..Over-rated, firewood.. BUT, an impressive POV, does make for an intriguing picture.. If you didn't know it was 'Art'.. it would be cool... But, the fact is sound idiot paid a small fortune for them.... Grief! Great view, Bill.. Rob
Superb montage and presentation. Well done!
This, to me, is interactive art. We know what they are, memories are stirred, feelings of fun and enjoyment are felt... it's all good. Nice shot.
COOOL & I LOVE PLAY BADMINTON
really cool!! marvelous!!
I can imagine walking up on this, not knowing were you are. That would make you step back and your mouth drop. :D Wow! LOL! Excellent POV and capture!
Omigosh, HOW do they stay put??? They must take VERY big nets and rackets!!--Oh, and then, if that's the case, who the heck plays with pieces that big--now THAT'S a scary thought!! Once again, though, I'd love to see these, get a feel for the energy they give out--would also love to hear people talk about them as they walk by!!
