Description
I was in Knoxville, Tennessee, for the Knoxville International Energy Exposition (actually the 1982 World's Fair) and spent a day up in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park was established in 1934 and is an estimated 187,000 acres of mountains and ridges of forest straddling the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. It also contains approximately 1,500 bears. At the first picnic area, the tourists were running for their cars, as a mother black bear and cub came out of the trees. The bear had a great time ripping coolers and picnic lunches open and eating anything she could find. Her cub had climbed up a tree. One elderly gentleman froze in his tracks. The bear climbed up on a table to check out the man. His wife was yelling out the car window, “get closer and take a picture” while everyone else was yelling for him to back away slowly. The bear collected her cub and left. The man had not taken a photo but I couldn’t help but to snap one off. Hand held film camera. Photo taken August 1982 and later scanned. I cropped out the man so I wouldn’t get in trouble.
Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments.

Great capture! I wonder if she is any relation to Yogi!
Thanks for leaving a hint of the man in the frame...maybe his wife was trying to get rid of him:) Some people...sheesh.
"Where's lunch?" ;D Excellent capture!
Lol at Bill--talk about uninvited guests!!
Cool and fortuitous shot of the critter as it prepares to sit down at the table. Probably demanded instant service. It doesn't look too large as bears go. And, after all these years how could you get in trouble by including the guy in the photo?
A mistake a lot of people make with wild animals... He's just lucky. Nice shot. Aloha
Very great capture , Dana !!
An excellent capture Dana, what a beauty
Good advice to step back. I saw a woman almost get killed by venturing this close to a black bear. My opinion was that the bear thought the camera was food. If you have to escape this situation, keep tossing things down in front of you as you back away, cameras, hats, sneakers, anything. Each item will take some attention from him to determine if it is food or not. Meanwhile you escape, hopefully.
First I am glad to know about the handheld film camera thing - I always dislike being the bearer :) LOL of bad news - now that I got past that - Holy sh.t - and what was the plan for getting the old man out of the bears mouth ? Ya right get closer - the only couple I know that would say that to thier spouse are in a bitter divorce ! Well at least we have Ace Ventura :)
Oh gosh - is he crazy??? Reminds me of two tourists, two years in a row, got killed at the Lion Park just north of Johannesburg because they got out of their vehicles to get a better and closer shot of the kitties!!! Pfft... Some people really just don't get the concept of "wild animals"... And you say this mama had a cub - even worse!!!
Cool shot Dana. I love the Smokies.
I've never yet encountered a bear, thank goodness. Too many Reader's Digest stories of bear attacks have given me a bit of a phobia. We do have black bears around here that get mentioned in the news every time someone sees one; they've been spotted too close to schools and homes lately. If they stick around the authorities tranquilize and relocate them to a more remote area. That guy is way too close for comfort!
la table n'est pas mise!!!!!!superbe photo!!
PRICELESS, the story made me chuckle :o) Great pic!!!!!
I live right next door to Knoxville, and I have seen my share of black bears. I watched a few weeks ago a mother letting her child get close to a cub, and thought oh my the mother bear is around some where and told her to please be careful, they are beautiful animals but they are wild and you have to respect their space they were there first after all. Nice capture.
oh my thsts not a great idea especially with a cub near by ! fantastic capture tho
