Description
It is called Scrap Metal Art. I wonder why? LOL
These ornate and purposefully rusty gates are in the new Bloch Building of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
"Metal art welding is basically a form of sculpting in reverse. Whereas sculpting starts from a block of stone and the process entails the removal of all material not part of what is to be the finished piece, metal art welding starts with nothing and keeps on adding pieces until the work of art in completed. Two processes, converse to each other, but resulting in the same end."

Btw, the person behind the gates is Tara (auntietk). She is looking at another welded pile of metal on the wall...and found it had all the great characteristics of composition, colors, shapes and forms that we've all come to value in more conventional art. :)

This is different! I like how they use old tools as part for the gate Great, or is that grate capture!
I've seen some fantastic metal sculptures that looked a lot like they may have come from the same source; this is not exactly a practical piece, but very pretty! Excellent capture!
Now see, and people used to wonder why I had a basement full of junk! That wasn't junk, it was just unassembled art. LOL! Nicely done, Bill! I'm gonna start looking through garage sales a little more often, I think! A wrench here, a C-clamp there..... Great for making art or opening wine bottles!
I love those gates! If I'd spent less time engrossed in the thing on the wall, I might have looked at the gates a little longer! Thanks for taking pictures of things I missed. :)
That would make for a fascinating gateway at the end of your driveway, no? Nice shot!
cool shot
Super cool exposition
Scrap metal is right, Bill, and OMG, are those tools that I see on the gates....hammers, wrenches, clamps, pick axes, etc.? Gotta give the person an A for effort in this concept. Lots of square footage apparent in the museum, which makes for a basically spartan milieu, even with the artwork.
I see that this artist didn't like hard work he's welded all his work tools to the gates lol those big crescent wrenches would be worth a bob or two.. lol. Excellent shot Bill a def fav..
Recycling at it's best. Well seen!
Very cool and quite interesting Bill...this looks like something my dad would create. lol
I love pieces like this--something about found stuff turned into art appeals to me a lot.
Interesting work. Great capture!!
so fun to look around to watch wonderful capture warm hugs, Linda
Its got all the tools. Interesting capture. Aloha
Fascinating compo as you use the gate as a divider between phootographer and viewer. Great observing mood.
What a weird definition! At art school we had classes in carving, modelling and construction, all in the Sculpture department. and within 'construction' there were specialists in various media; metal, wood, plastics, card and paper, etc. And of course many public pieces are made with clay and then cast in bronze at specialist foundries. Anyway..all that aside, you made a great image, and I love the intensity of interest Tara gives off!
I love the gates! It looks like something I need welded infront of my windows here in sunny and crime ridden SA!!
Very interesting work which most men would study and the ladies probably wouldn't give a second glance to.
Wonderful art. Great shot.

Very unusual gates, don't know if I would like them as the gateway to my mansion :o) but you never know!!!!
