Description
This is one of a pair of statues at Grant Park in Chicago. This is The Bowman, and across East Congress Parkway stands The Spearman. The statues were installed in 1928.
Although there is an urban myth that the statues at one time held weapons which were later removed it is, indeed, a myth. Ivan Mestrovic, the sculptor, never gave these warriors weapons, preferring to leave bow and spear to our imaginations.
(You'll have to imagine The Spearman as well, since I didn't take a photograph of him. Sort of the same as this one, facing in the other direction ... you get the idea!) :)

I grew up in Lusaka, Zambia, which had an almost identical statue in the town square - as far as I remember, it also had an imaginary weapon. I wonder if it's still there?

Hmm. I am humming with content. This is so much my kind of image - huge appeal factor given the composition and the fact that it is B&W with a touch of sepia. The lighting and exposure are wonderful, the lamps almost sihouetted againt the structure. The cloudy sky... A fav. Very well done, Clive

I like the way this turned out...postwork is just right. I'll bet you had it done in a mere five minutes or so, right? LOL. Actually, there is a special charm to allowing us to use our imaginations. Afterall, shouldn't a fine photo enable us to do that?

This shot just screams "Chicago" though given the subject matter it's probably something more like "Sheekuhgoo" which probably translates to "Eeew...stinky" in the indigenous language of the region, either that or something a bit more vulgar. But enough about that stuff. This is a great shot! It has the look of those really cool photos you find in books like "Forgotten Chicago" or "Chicago: She's Beginning to Show Her Age." Well...that second title hasn't been used yet and if I did a historical book on this city, I'd probably use that title. Needless to say, this has that historical vibe that makes Chicago look so darn good. And as a Chicagoan, I have to admit, I though both of these guys were bowmen...just goes to show how little Chicagoans know about their own statues! I love this shot: everything about it is perfect and rather like the bowman without a bow (I thought it was omitted from the statue due to the fact that it would probably be more fragile than anyone would want...or that it would be hell to ship to its current location.) I like the idea that it was left to our imaginations a lot better! What I really like is the way the sky is differentiated. Skies like this one are immensely hard to capture, but you did a perfect job here! I love this image, but then you do so many top-notch images. This is superb. By the way, I also love the fact that this is image # 1234. How perfect is THAT?

These guys (well, this one at least) is really familiar from all of the days I was hanging around Columbia College and spending time in that park. Black and white makes this pop out at me in a different way than color does and that gives this a lot more impact. This is great.
