Description

Owls have excellent hearing but its ears are actually hidden openings on the sides of the head, not the tufts on top. What are the tufts for? Scientists are not sure but some think they might help to attract a mate. Though I prefer the other explantion of it being able to disrupt the shape of the head to help it stealth hunting. They also seem to me to be able to express mood by how they shape the tufts. The talons of this owl are capable of piercing 18 guage steel, and are larger than some big cats! But maybe it is the Golden eyes that are the most wonderful feature and little is really known about owls vision apart from being able to find prey from a mile away, and the jury is out if this is the result of the vision or remarkable hearing!

to me it's both the eyes and the tufts, which make those birds so very special and attractive... I can hear some at night here, but I never spotted them so far..smile... a fine shot , Danny, as always

I would be most kind to a bird that is capable of piercing 18 guage steel, I can see by his penetrating eyes why the saying wise old owl, whether or not it's the eyes or the remarkable hearing that detects his prey this a very unique animal! Excellent Daniel.
