Description

This turtle has been in my pond for several years but I never was sure of its species. There are only a few choices possible for where I live but none seemed correct. The new camera and 200mm lens made it possible for me to get a decent photo and good look. I managed to get an Id after contacting the biology department at the University of Texas in Arlington. I was informed that it is an old Red-eared Turtle (probably a male) and that the distinctive colored markings had faded with age. This photo was taken late in the day from about 12'. The turtle is eating a piece of a dead fish (Red-ears eat live and dead prey as well as some vegetation when they are young. They become almost total vegetarians after adulthood but occasionally will still eat meat.) The Dragonfly is a male Eastern Amberwing. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee
