Description
Beginning as early as the 14th century, a grocer (also called purveyor) was a dealer in comestible dry goods such as spices, pepper, sugar, and (later) cocoa, tea and coffee. These items were bought in bulk, hence the term grocer from the French "grossier" meaning wholesaler.
Formerly written grosser, the origin of the name, one who sells by the gross, or deals by wholesale by the Victorian era with the Tins and dairy products on sale it became more the multi million business it is today which developed into the first supermarket a little later when Clarence Saunders of Memphis, Tennessee invented the self-service grocery store with open stock in 1916.

Super and interesting article!
Super period picture. I had never read the background of the word grocer before. I worked in two grocery stores during my high school years. One was run by three Irishmen who were always kidding me as a "left footed Irishman" and a "brass ankle"...both old terms for a non-Catholic Scot-Irishman. We had fun and the customers were well served.

A beautiful capture, Danny ,and I learnt one more French word just now, thanks to you! (didn't know 'grocer' derived from 'grossier'!)
