Description
Alone In The Dark
At ten
Alone in the dark
Who knows
What those sounds were
What made that creak
Wait - a flash of light?
Is the house on fire?
Is someone there?
Afraid
Of everything
So much unknown
At twenty
Alone in the dark
Running conversations
Over and over
What I would say
What he would say
How things might go
Awake late into the night
Agitated
Kept up by things
That never happened
At thirty
Awake in the middle of the night
But not alone
My lover woke me up
Mad about something
He decided I'd done
Whatever it was
He was sure it was true
Angry
He would wake me up
Just to yell
At forty
Alone in the dark
Was that a pain?
Is it important?
So many friends have died
From cancer
Lung infection
Anyone can go at any time
Nervous
About the unknown
The uncertainty of life
At fifty
Alone in the dark
A hot flash woke me up
Now I wonder
About really important things
Should I learn to make egg foo yong
Or buy it from the restaurant
Around the corner?
Resigned
To the fact that I'll just be
Awake for a while
Alone in the dark
Space to think
Ponder life's vagaries
There's no fear in the dark
Only friends past and present
And the gift of perspective
Time for contemplation
No chance of sleep
Alert
I like who I'm with
When I'm alone in the dark

You are really good at this. Srsly.
Ah,attacks of night time anxiety....follows us throughout our lifetime I guess. I'm not usually into words as much as images, but this one really moved me today. Well done!
Very eloquent prose which I like very much.. It seems to hold true to life that maybe we do learn as we grow older!
real cool work and well done
very beautiful work!
Ahh, yes, those wonderful hot flashes. I was reading along, all serious, and read that line and burst out laughing. Well spoken, and I'm glad you like the person you are with when you are alone in the dark. We all like her too. I like your writing as much as I like your photography.
Very moving poetry
Excellent composition!
And at 80+, a deteriorating dotard, you go from day to day, thankful that you've lasted this long.
I once saw a Bacardi ad, of all things, that announced that some people relish the dark because it liberates the other senses. I think I saw that in the pages of OMNI magazine, wedged in between pages of science fiction and gonzo-journalism-style science fact. Anyway, I thought of that when I read this piece. It's brilliantly composed and wonderfully paced. I love it.
Life is a sad thing, and at night we feel the most that sadness. You found words that reach down very deep. Thank you!
This speaks to me on yet another level. Of the few poems I've done, I myself don't like my, "Alone in the Dark" (for the challenge) and now I know why. If you think you are relaxed about all of this at fifty, wait 'til sixty:-))) My challenge piece was contrived to fit the requirement. I, like you, am quite comfortable with the person I'm with when I am alone in the dark. Thanks, been wondering for five weeks why I didn't like that piece.
Oh yeah, do I get this!! All these stages we go thru, to finally really learn to accept who we are and know it's all as it should be. I love those moments after I get to bed, and my mind wanders. Moments entirely our own.
brilliant composition!!!!! your thoughts flow effortlessly!!!!!!
A really beautiful Poem Tara. Yes, you are really good at this.
Tara, that Is SO good! I love that progression, a truly excellent piece.
Wonderful stuff Auntie, you really are very good at this!
you are a fantastic writer !
A wonderful poem!
wonderful words Tara May have a beautiful day warm hug and love, Linda Kaye
Oh yes, how liberating as the decades gets treated by your tongue. In between 20 and your last verse, old age sets in, beware!
Great piece of art...I'm glad you like who you with, alone in the dark...
Wow. such talent here. Great job.
some nights I just hit fav after fav, like I hit a motherlode in a gallery...well this is my third fav in your gallery, this session. I agree with Chip about the pacing & feel, etc. It's just right. And I understand how the smaller things become the center as we get older. And the sense of being at home with ourselves...And I understand the feeling, in the dark, of the ghosts of passed loved ones (friend or family) speaking to us in the dark...a beautiful piece, relaxed & introspective, and just right.
I like who you're with when you're alone in the dark - beautifully written piece!
Thinkingful words...I wonder too sometimes.
Fantastic poem, really liked it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
