Description
This is a glass ball made from Mount Saint Helens ash.
When Mount Saint Helens blew on May 18, 1980, there was a LOT of ash around here. Some of the ash ended up in the hands of glass makers, and the local market was flooded with jewelry and figurines and hundreds of glass items made from Mount Saint Helens ash.

I used some of that ash when I did ceramics up at Bremerton, while my ship was in drydock. It was interesting to see the effects when used in a glaze. Great image and thanks for the wonderful reminder
Great use of your studio again, great lighting. Very well done, Clive
That is very cool and the lighting is excellent.
I love your low light photos.
love the golden glow..
It may be low light, but you used it to its fullest; the textures and depth make this shot really compelling. I love the tactile nature of this. It is mellow and beautiful.
Wow, This is excellent. great lighting.
Beautiful shot, this is a great piece and the light is wonderful--you do have a most amazing studio!!
Fascinating ornament and good use of low light, great story too. I am sure I would of have some if I would lived over there.
Really beautiful! Some potters attach a great deal of significance to certain wood ashes: one of my fellow potters was eccentric enough to burn his apple tree at a certain phase of the moon etc., but I have to say that I couldn't tell the difference between his apple ash glaze and mine!
Such a beautiful lowlight glass ball. I like your lowlight images alot. I saw the balls on the link. WOW they are so beautiful in all different colors. Thanks for sharing both this lovely glass ball and the link.

I didn't know all that....and something pretty rises from the ashes ~

What a neat shot of a most unusual object. I think I've got a figurine around here somewhere made of Mt. St. Helen ash...but I've never seen these ornaments before. Thanks for the link. Bill
