Description

Myself and JeffG7BRJ had a trip to Whitby today, we had a few other people with us and wasn't supposed to be a photo day out. But we couldn't resist lol. I realised Jeff wouldn't make the 199 steps up to the Abbey but I think he got a few good shots elsewhere. This is my first true HDR and was the shot I was hoping for. Hope you like it as much as I do. In 657 the great Northumbrian King, Oswy, founded a monastery on this site under the rule of St Hild. Oswy's monastery at Whitby appears to have been destroyed by the Danes around 867 and fell to ruin. But shortly after the Norman Conquest in 1066, Reinfrid, a Knight who had fought for William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings, visited the headland. He returned as a monk in the 1070's and quickly attracted a new community of men who soon were to follow the Benedictine rule and their monastery, to which the existig ruins on the headland belong. In 1539 Whitby Abbey was surpressed by Henry VIII and the buildings were bought by the Cholmleys a prominent local family. Much of the monastery was then demolished but the Abbey church preserved. All information gained by the Whitby Abbey hand book.

Absolutely fantastic - the colors are so rich and vibrant and the point of view is just impeccable. In truth it looks like some type of digital painting because the beauty of the shot is just too good to be real. This shot convinces me to add you to my favourite artists, my first pure photographer. You have an eye for landscapes and people and allow me a taste of Britain that I will probably never see.
