Description
Myself and JeffG7BRJ had a trip to Whitby today, we had a few other people with us and wasn't supposed to be a photo day out. But we couldn't resist lol. I realised Jeff wouldn't make the 199 steps up to the Abbey but I think he got a few good shots elsewhere.
This is my first true HDR and was the shot I was hoping for.
Hope you like it as much as I do.
In 657 the great Northumbrian King, Oswy, founded a monastery on this site under the rule of St Hild.
Oswy's monastery at Whitby appears to have been destroyed by the Danes around 867 and fell to ruin. But shortly after the Norman Conquest in 1066, Reinfrid, a Knight who had fought for William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings, visited the headland. He returned as a monk in the 1070's and quickly attracted a new community of men who soon were to follow the Benedictine rule and their monastery, to which the existig ruins on the headland belong.
In 1539 Whitby Abbey was surpressed by Henry VIII and the buildings were bought by the Cholmleys a prominent local family. Much of the monastery was then demolished but the Abbey church preserved.

excellent in every way
Wonderful photographic render of this superb abbey, which is found in several samples here on the site . Your capture enhances every detail of the monument and the serenity of the place , after all these centuries of battles and conquests. Excellent work!
Beautiful Alan! I know it well!
Excellent , well done...
Wow~ Excellent photo. Congrats on the HDR!!!
Wow! Wonderful result
Way to go Alan this is a cracker!
Nice one, Alan. Good HDRI effect. I can just about understand how it works, but got a wee tool from MEDIACHANCE that allows one to do it on the fly. I was in Whitby, in early August, on a coach tour, recovering from major surgery. I too, 'dyked' the climb, having visted in 1972, and instead found myself wandering up towards the museum and park opposite. The museum was shut, but there were more butterflies in the gardens than I've seen in some so-called Butterfly Parks.. ;o) Unfortunately I was still suffering from terminal camera jitter, so don't have any decent photos of the day. Our party had spotted a llama and a camel, in a roadside field just north of Scarborough that morning. They were happily chewing the cud, next to a huge circus big top. On the way back, that evening, they were not to be seen. The memories remain.. ;o) Warm regards, John.
You did a fantastic job Alan mate, I like everything about this image, it's a top notch HDR, The above mentioned mediachance do a great contender to photomatix, it's called Dynamic Photo HDR, and is way cool, I just got a copy with the last of my birthday money, worth every penny in my book. check it out mate http://www.mediachance.com/hdri/index.html
EXCELLENT CAPTURE !!!!!!!!!!!!!! A beautiful image! Roby ;O)
Fascinating..., your photographic subject, the history and the HDR discussion. I tell myself, work on your photography, get into HDR later. Then I look at the website PD154 has recommended and I'm itching to give it a go. Your result above is excellent. Nice job. Big temptation. Bill

Excellent work! I just finished a book on this very subject, how many years of toil went into the building of cathedrals and how design evolved to include these beautiful window arches and the grand heights. Your shot has really brought this all to a vivid reality for me. : )
