Description

Here's the World War II and Korean War era Navy FG-1D Corsair fighter/bomber. Here we see it with wings folded just as it would have been on the hangar deck and at times on the flight deck of a fleet aircraft carrier in the 1940s and early 1950s. Note the white smoke. The pilot had just started up the big radial engine and as they typically did, it belched a cloud of white smoke. Because this plane uses a sixteen foot prop, its' landing gear is quite tall and its' wings have a unique gull shape. You'll see this in a "Heritage Flight" photo flown with an F-18 (see my photo, "Shipmates"). Cute story: As I was photographing this airplane later in the day, the pilot landed and as soon as he turned off the active runway, he began to fold up the wings. A little girl standing with her dad was horrified and in all innocence cried out with great alarm, "Oh, Daddy, it's broken!" I love this airplane's color. It is a lot different from the bluish/gray camouflage used by the Navy today and as seen on the F-18 in "Almost Supersonic". Bill
