Description
The plaque-covered tomb of Carlos Gardel in Cementerio de la Chacarita in Buenos Aires.
Gardel was born in Paris, France in 1890 and was brought by his poor and single mother to Buenos Aires when he was three years old. He passed his formative years in a neighborhood near the Mercado de Abasto, a central produce market. He came to epitomize the porteno.
He began singing in his youth in the neighboorhood. His performing career began after he became friends with the Uruguayan-born Jose Razzano, forming the popular duo Gardel-Razzano.
In 1917 Gardel became a solo performer and became an immediate success in Argentina and other Latin American countries, although the Argentine elite still despised the music and what it stood for-the rise of the middle class that challenged its monopoly on power.
Gardel travelled to Spain and France where widespread acceptance finally made him palatable even to the elite sectors of Argentine society.
Gardel died in a plane crash in Medellin, Columbia in June 1935. Each year on the anniversary of his death his tomb is covered with flowers by adoring fans.
