Description
Stromboli is the most spectacular of the seven Aeolian Islands located in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily. Stromboli is a volcano rising 2000 m above the sea floor. It is 924 m (3031-ft) high. Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes in Europe and erupts almost constantly, and the explosions of molten rock are an unforgettable spectable at night.
This view is from the east showing the three villages of San Bartolo, San Vincenzo and Scari which are merged into one town. They are save from the lava flow which is confined to the Sciara del Fuoco (Trail of Fire) on the volcano's northwestern flank.
This picture was taken on 7 July 2007.

Some seven years ago I spent my holidays in Calabria, the foot of Italy, and Stromboli was clearly visible from there! Excellent shot!
Safe as maybe, but I would prefer to be off the island than on it. I wonder what the fall out is when the wind changes and blows the volcanic dust over the villages. I think I would sooner live at the top of the world than live at the foot of an active volcano. Excellent capture Sig, I guess this makes a spectacular sight at night with the gases belching out into the dark sky, it looks to have a tinge of fire now in broad daylight. Superb work. Bravo!!!!!
Wonderful work.

I am so woth Jeff on this one Sig - safe or not safe - if that bad boy starts to cough, I want to watch from quite a distance away!! Great shot. xx (let me know when you get your lens)

Stromboli,or one of it's irruptions, was the inspiration for Orodruin.
Beautiful shot!!!!!!!! THink I'd prefer a little more distance between it and the village....
You can only hope it continues to vent regularly and not bottle up and blow! A fascinating shot and information. I don't think I would like living there but I'd love to see it. :-)

great to see this, Sig! Until now I thought a Stromboli was a sort of ice cream dessert, like a Knickerbocker Glory but with liqueurs! I can see why it was called it now.
