Description
The Grey Heron, Ardea Cinerea is a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae, the Grey Heron is one of my favorite birds to watch, because of its size and stealthy movements. It's quite an impressive bird, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in the milder south and west, but many birds retreat in winter from colder regions.
I captured this one in the wild, and is perhaps the closest I have ever got to one, it was busy fishing close to a huge nest that was nearby this being the start of the breeding season..
It is a large bird, standing 90-100 cm tall, with a 175-195 cm wingspan and a weight of 1-2 kg. Its plumage is largely grey above, and off-white below. Adults have a white head with a broad black supercilium and slender crest, while immatures have a dull grey head. It has a powerful pinkish-yellow bill, which is brighter in breeding adults. It has a slow and rather cumbersome flight, with its long neck retracted (S-shaped). This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes and spoonbills, which extend their necks.

Excellent photo !!!!! , thanks for sharing , Ana
the length of that crest is surprising. You got a great profile shot on this portrait. The colors in the beak are really rich. I do love the larger water birds. We have giant herons and smaller egrets and such and I love to pop up next to them when I walk the smaller lakes and river banks.
These are always so much fun to watch. I love their coloration and their grace. Excellent capture. Bunny
