Description
The Grey Heron, Ardea Cinerea is a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae, the Grey Heron is one of my favorite birds to watch, because of its size and stealthy movements. It's quite an impressive bird, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in the milder south and west, but many birds retreat in winter from colder regions.
I captured this one in the wild, and is perhaps the closest I have ever got to one, it was busy fishing close to a huge nest that was nearby this being the start of the breeding season..
It is a large bird, standing 90-100 cm tall, with a 175-195 cm wingspan and a weight of 1-2 kg. Its plumage is largely grey above, and off-white below. Adults have a white head with a broad black supercilium and slender crest, while immatures have a dull grey head. It has a powerful pinkish-yellow bill, which is brighter in breeding adults. It has a slow and rather cumbersome flight, with its long neck retracted (S-shaped). This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes and spoonbills, which extend their necks.

Superbly captured, the lighting and detail are stunning
wow, such a wonderful shot, lucky you to have this beauty in front, what I like also is this framing, wonderful done
What a wonderful pic! I have managed not to lose my pond fish to these so far this year!
A fabulous looking bird portrait you have taken and uploaded here!!!
What a noble and majestic bird this heron is! A magnificent closeup and a lot of style in this presentation.
Watching the singular herons is something forever entertaining. When they catch a fish they have to get it just so lengthwise to swallow it.
Wonderful and impressive photo my friend.....!!!!
WOW, that's really amazing!
great shot!
such a fantastic wildlife shot; so crisp. Beautiful details!
Not one of my favourite birds Danny, there is a bird sanctuary about 2 miles away as the Heron flys, the last count they had 17 breeding pairs. I have a pond full of Koi carp and they have been sniffing round on more than one occasion. I have never lost a fish to them though, my pond is well netted. Excellent capture, beautiful detail, I never noticed the plume from the back of the head before, but then I think this is the first side view I have seen. Bravo!!!!!
great capture...
This is a lovely capture Danny and brilliantly focused. I love the framing, a perfect presentation. Hugs Chrissy xx

Beautiful boke! Great shot!
Great portrait of a great looking bird! The frame is a little distracting for me but other than that it is perfect.
