Description
This Brimstone butterfly is often the first to be seen in early spring, and the Cornish Hedgerows where this was taken surrounded fields of daffodils as early as December..
It is thought by some that the term butterfly originally referred to this insect because of its butter-like yellow colouring. There is little agreement on this matter, other theories stating that the name refers to the butter-coloured droppings of butterflies or to the ancient myth that witches transformed into butterflies to steal butter.

I had always been told that butterflies took butter but I didnto know they were transformed witches. Tricky business those witches are up to. LOL And like so many others, the thistle is a favorite in the field. Life and death depending on type but always a stellar attraction, much like this capture of the butterfly and thistle.
