Description
This Brimstone butterfly is often the first to be seen in early spring, and the Cornish Hedgerows where this was taken surrounded fields of daffodils as early as December..
It is thought by some that the term butterfly originally referred to this insect because of its butter-like yellow colouring. There is little agreement on this matter, other theories stating that the name refers to the butter-coloured droppings of butterflies or to the ancient myth that witches transformed into butterflies to steal butter.

Fantastic shot my friend, this photo have a very impressive detail....!!!!
Thanks for the history lesson Danny, you learn something new every day. I knew there was a link to butter but not the whole story. Excellent capture of the butterfly the clarity and detail is spot on, love that it is perched on a thistle thats in bloom as well, a proper thistle at that, not like the imitation that I took the other day. This is the one I associate with Porage(I have a bowl every morning) and Scotland. The wings on this pretty thing reminds me of cabbage of all things, the texture and thick veining just looks like a cabbage leaf. Outstanding work. Bravo!!!!!
