Description
This is just about where the road down from the caldera ends, having been covered by lava flows from the current eruption. The steam cloud in the distance is where the lava is currently entering the sea.
The cloud itself is a dangerous thing to be near; it contains some nasty chemicals, including hydrochloric acid, and glassy spiny things that will do a number on your lungs, not to mention the big rocks that are tossed about by the meeting of very hit lava and cool water.
We walked across the lava field most of the way out to the cloud, I think about 2 1/2 miles (4 km) each way. Fortunately it wasn't a sunny day, or it would have been much hotter, and we would not have even attempted it. Still, it took about four hours and we were really tired by the time we were done. My next uploads will show what it was like and what we saw at the other end.

Incredible view. Nice to know all that stuff is spouting off into the air like that...NOT. Still a great shot!
Very nice capture. The walk sure takes a toll on the body but the rewards are worth it. Excellent Job. Aloha
Great shot. Thanks for sharing.
Did you take extra shoes with you in case the ones you had on melted? The rugged rocks in the foreground and the steam plume in the distance really help to keep you focused on what is actually happening here. Great shot! :)
This is so cool and so wonderful that you actually got to see what we only see on TV! Very fascinating!!
