Chief Seattle replied to a demand from the US government for all the reservation lands this was part of his reply.. Maybe the most insightful plea for conservation I have ever read
The Ashes
You must teach your children that the ground beneath their feet are the ashes of your grandfathers. So that they will respect the land, tell your children that the earth is rich with the lives of our kin. Teach your children what we have taught our children, that the earth is our mother.
Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. If men spit upon the ground, they spit upon themselves. This we know: The earth does not
belong to man; man belongs to the earth. This we know. All things are connected like the blood which unites one family.
All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. Man did not weave the web of life: he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself. Even the white man, whose God walks and talks with him as friend to friend, cannot be exempt from the common destiny.
We may be brothers after all. We shall see. One thing we know, which the white man may one day discover our God is the same God. You may think now that you own Him as you wish to own our land; but you cannot. He is the God of man, and His compassion is equal for the red man and the white.
This earth is precious to Him, and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its Creator. The whites too shall pass; perhaps sooner than all other tribes. Contaminate your bed, and you will one night suffocate in your own waste. But in your perishing you will shine brightly, bred by the strength of the God who brought you to this land and for some special purpose gave you dominion over this land and over the red man.
That destiny is a mystery to us, for we do not understand when the buffalo are all slaughtered, the wild horses are tamed, the secret corners of the forest heavy with scent of many men, and the view of the ripe hills blotted by talking wires.
Where is the thicket? Gone.
Where is the eagle? Gone.
The end of living, and the beginning of survival.

Love how you feel just right drawn in to this landscape. Amazing sky and ligth! Very dramatic.
It is true that we take for granted and abuse what is so abundant. Powerful words. CC
Gorgeous landscape - full of atmosphere with that dramatic sky hanging over it! 8;o)
Very powerful words that hit home Dan..In this day and age we seem to forget that we are our own destiny, life goes on if we take care of mother earth...What kind of world are we leaving our kids?...the signs of decay are everywhere, and the majority of us are ignoring it. Mother is sick, and when she goes she takes us with her....Chilling words Dan, and a perfect image to convey them....Happy NY!! Aloha~

I am tempted to agree with Klaus! No further comment except that it means the capture is nothing less than excellent too. I get gooeseflesh!
A very strong photograph.. those clouds..wonderful.. and those words.. so true. But.. I wonder.. is it true that you left the birds behind and became more a landscape photographer.
I love this shot a lot and so deep meaning in those lines.
Where are Haldeman and Erlichman? Where is Dave Beck? The citizens of Seattle owe us a reply. Researching the origin of words I found Seattle to be associated with the removal of bodily waste. Perhaps that is why the chief refers to ashes. Ignoring the people one sees only the rain forests of the Olympic Peninsula and the Straits of Juan de Fuca.
I have read this before and I think it was here in the gallery. an awesome truth in the story. your landscape is outstanding and perfect for the story
Very interesting; the words make you think ... the photo is perfect
Nature is so beautiful and hopefully it stays that way. Happy New Year... Aloha
