Well. One way would be to create a fog and a text object. Keyframe scale changes, smog going big to small, text the other way. You could throw in modifiers on each object as well, if you like, although the modifier selection for the fog is considerably smaller. You also have a lot of parameters you can play with in the modeling room for the fog, not to mention transparency for the text. Carrara is very good with this kind of thing. Play around with it. Almost unlimited number of combinations you can use to get a nice result.
I think I'd take a whack at turning text into fog then reversing the animation. I think animating a combination of distorts and a translucent material could turn your text into broken bits of smoke...I agree with Tunesy that at that point you would "sneak in" some proper 4d clouds and "sneak out" the remains of the text. Actually, I wonder if you could do something with 4D clouds and a transparency map, too. Another thing I wonder is, as far as I know the elements going into a boolean intersection can be changed freely up until you "freeze" it by exporting the result. So you might be able to boolean intersect your distorting text objects with the still-moving cloud...
I still hate to say this, but Cinema4D is easier for this sort of task -- in the C4D workspace you "drop" one modeller on top of another; you can literally make text from metaballs applied to particles applied to text objects. Not that you can't do it in Carrara! But I'd look at the strengths of Carrara and work within them.

Could help to find the way to create a text created from smog... well smog come first and then the smog become text... you see ?... I'm french talking... sorry
