Subject: but does it sport great subd modeling tools... ?

ok gang... I currently have Carrara Studio 2... and though I wouldn't even concider modeling a fart in it I do love how it renders... not as quick as some apps, but better results than any other I have worked with... yup, Carrara sports a mighty fine render engine... my question is... does it finally come with the modeling tools I need for subd, box modeling... stuff like move>normal, or extrude>region, or edge tools ie loops for selection, also select by color? is the dolly cam on the mouse or is it still right click first? in other words, does Carrara 3 finally have all the tools, or... is this just another walk down yesterdays lane? I mean, I do all my modeling in Wings3D right now, then export either into C4D or Carrara for coloring/texturing and rendering... I like C4D ok enough but... I really enjoy working within Carrara much better... so deos it have the tools to keep me in one app or... I would love to see some screenshots of the new improved vertex modeler doing simple things like as mentioned... move>normal.. also would like some more info on the new spline extrude stuff... thnx

The vertex modeler does have several of the features you've expressed but they may not work exactly the way you want (comparison from wings to C). I'd read through the manual over the vertex modeler section. I think you'll be pleased. -Kix

IBox: The dolly cam is pretty much unchanged from C2.x. I have a button on my trackball that makes the Dolly work, so it's not a problem for me. The preview window is now in the properties tray, and when I mouse over that and hold the "d" key, it dollies just fine. The add vertex tool is improved, it will now connect the newly added points. I'm still getting the hang of the extrusion tool(s), they're new and I fear a bit wonky, that should be fixed (hopefully) by the time of the final release in Sept. The property tray has some improvements/refinements. When the select tool is chosen, and a vertex (or polyline/s or polygon) is selected, you can enter in a numeric amt to move it/them in X,Y, and/or Z direction. Same thing happens with you use the resize tool. One big thing for me, is that in the main 3D window, yaw, pitch and roll's been replaced by X,Y and Z! Even though it may seem to you that Carrara is "going down the same road" -- in my opinion that road's now paved and widened. You may enjoy some of the rendering improvements, too. The GI is now part of the RayTracer engine. You can use something called HDRI for enviromental lighting and it gives some pretty impressive results. Think there's a thread here somewhere with some examples. Although I've been recently laid off, this upgrade impressed me so much that I ordered it and having been playing around with the beta, I don't regret it one iota.

Hi all, thank you kindly for your honest answers... I sort was thinking myself, that it would be another version or so before they figure out just how the modeler should work for the modeler...hehe... and this though not so good for us who enjoy the look and feel of the app... it is non the less a reality eh... oh well Maybe v4 eh? lol I will still use v2 for all of my rendering for the present as it kicks butt for rendering eh :D thanx folks... I appreciate the honesty Have a good one, I will be back, with more work to show :D
