When I first arrived in town, they were trying to pawn this vessel off as the original frigate CONSTELLATION which was built in town at Fells Point. Actually, it's a fabrication that goes back to beyond the Civil War. The original frigate was worn out, and the Navy wanted to replace it. Congress said 'No.' However, funds were available for another rebuild. Thus the frigate was rebuilded from scratch and the Navy got this sloop. What's the difference? Plenty. While in the UK, I visited HMS VICTORY and some years later, in Boston, I visited USS CONSTITUTION. They were much alike in strength, but very different in armament. Then we moved to Balamer and I noted that CONSTELLATION was much lighter in build. Something not kosher here. The two frigates were 'supposed' to be near sisters, but one was a heavyweight! The story became clear some years later as the truth unfolded. Anyhow, CONSTELLATION was Atlantic Fleet flagship into the 1950's. The sloop was decommissioned to free the name for a carrier.
