Description
One guilty pleasure I almost indulge myself with is adding species that have "fun" names. In the past, I couldn't resist creating a Tawny-breasted Leaf-tosser or a Yellow-billed Tit-Tyrant, so coming across a Snoring Rail was a "must-do".
Snoring Rails are endemic to Sulawesi (Indonesia) where it is known from the lowlands and hills in north, central and south-eastern parts of the island. The sexes are similar, but the female has a brighter rufous hindneck and often less white on its chin. Also, the base of the bill and iris are reddish (yellowish in male). The typical call is a snore-like ‘ee-orrrr’ sound that gives the bird its common name.
3,500–15,000 adult individuals rmain with a declining population trend. Its numbers are thought to be decreasing, and its restricted range and small population mean that the species is classified as Vulnerable. It may always have been thinly spread, but there has been widespread deforestation within its range resulting in loss and fragmentation of suitable habitat. The rail has been protected under Indonesian law since 1972, and the large Lore Lindu and Bogani Nani Wartabone National Parks are within its range, but logging and rattan cutting occurs even in these protected areas, and human encroachment is also a problem at Lore Lindu.
