Description
~Sonya Blade~
Sonya Blade made her debut in the original "Mortal Kombat" videogame in 1992, created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, with Tobias designing her character. A US Special Forces operative from Earthrealm, Sonya was introduced as a tough, no-nonsense fighter pursuing the criminal Kano. Interestingly, she was a late addition: the developers realized the game needed a female fighter, and Sonya inherited the storyline originally intended for a character named Kurtis Stryker.
Sonya was inspired partly by martial artist and actress Cynthia Rothrock, while her name came from one of Ed Boon's sisters. She also made gaming history as Mortal Kombat's first female fighter. Ironically, despite becoming one of the franchise's most recognizable characters, she was left out of Mortal Kombat II because she and Kano were reportedly the least-selected fighters in the original game - only to return in Mortal Kombat 3.
From arcade sprite to big-screen action hero, Sonya has come a long way - and actress Jessica McNamee now brings her to life in the latest "Mortal Kombat II" (2026) film. Three decades later, the Special Forces badass is still kicking, and proving that being the only woman in the room was no reason to back down.
However, her role in the new movie was minor. They made her look important, but she took some serious beating in nearly all fights. Maybe that's Ok, since the movie was about Kitana, and not her. Nonetheless, I was happy to see her in the movie, where Jessica McNamee did a pretty good Sonya on my book. Loved the movie!

Go on girl let them feel that blade
The movie was surprisingly fun considering the cheesiness of the source material. ^^
If the new movie can capture even a fraction of the spirit of that render, they will have a hit. Superb.
Thank you! I believe this 2026 movie has fixed everything that went wrong with the last one. It tells the story of Kitana, while giving space for other characters to have their screen time as well. I just hoped Sonya would have a more significant role, but hey, this is a Kitana movie, so I get it. It was a lot of fun and I recommend it for fans of the game. :)
Superb image!
Thank you! It was a surprisingly fun movie. ^___^
