Description
NO, not another 1959 Impala, this time it's the 1964 Impala SS version with the 409 cubic inch V8 engine (that's about 6.7 litres).
This one has taken a lot of my time even though it arrived as a Blender file already. It wasn't rigged and all the material zones for the interior had the same material applied. On top of that the UV mapping of the tyres was faulty, distorting the tread normal map and texture map. Because the mapping scheme was a little odd the UV mapping on the tyres took quite a while to correct and then I had to trawl through all the materials for the interior and work out which settings and texture maps were appropriate. Of course with internet access I was able to find plenty of photos to help, but still it took hours and I hadn't even started rigging the model. I have done a basic rig plus the doors now, and at some stage I may rig the trunk lid so it opens. If I rig the trunk I will have to add hinges and the internal frame and panels for the lid, which because it is so large has quite a lot of supporting structure to it.
This Blender model came in one of the stock colours for the car back in 1964, a nice blue colour, but among the photos I found that yellow was also a stock colour. Although the stock yellow wasn't quite as bright as this it did look great in yellow and white, so I tried it and I like it. I'll probably try some of the other stock colour schemes too.
This needs a lighting rig and a little more work on the interior but it's far too late to work on it now, so it will be finished another day.

Gorgeous '66 Chevrolet Impala SS!
'64! But thanks, yes, it's a fine model in spite of the flaws I had to correct. Considering it was only $7.50 I am not too annoyed about all the work to put it right.
Gret Model!
It is, and only $7.50. It did need some work but at that price I didn't mind too much.
Amazingly detailed work. You are a true artist. :-)
To be fair to the creator almost all the detail was already there in the package, I just had to find the texture maps and put them on the instruments and badges. It was still a little annoying having to correct a model that I paid for, but as it was cheap it was not as annoying as it could have been.
Glad you are enjoying these, though the cars are nearly all done so there won't be very many more to show off.
Man, you do an AMAZING job on these, my friend! Wow - that's a beauty! Now I want one!
As long as I've been playing with 3D, I've never tried rigging anything. I may have to give it a play if things here ever settle down.
Sometimes learning is fun. In the case of Blender, rigging cars at a basic level is easy, and you need no knowledge of how Blender works. There is a script that I use called, wait for it — rig-a-car. Once you name the parts of the vehicle the script produces a fairly good rig all by itself. This has suspension, ground sensing, drift capability and various other attributes. It doesn't rig doors, lights or the steering wheel, so I add those in manually.
A 1964 Chevrolet Impala in showroom condition recently went at auction for over $150,000 US. You could look for a rusty one and restore it if you know how, but that's a two-to-three year project and requires a lot of specialised skills.
This 3D model was a lot cheaper...
Nice to see you here and I am glad you're enjoying these.
Oops! My mistake - my Dad had a '66 Chev, which I was thinking about as I was typing, and somehow I didn't notice my error.
A very similar car, not surprising you made that error. Have a great day!
Excellent. Great car
Thanks, I agree it looks great in that colour.
