Description
Another bird species from my new set, this time a tinkerbird. Tinkerbirds or tinker barbets are the genus Pogoniulus of the Lybiidae, the African barbet family of near passerines. They are named for their repetitive, metallic call that sounds remarkably like a small hammer tapping rhythmically on metal. Tinkerbirds are widely distributed in tropical Africa.
The Speckled Tinkerbird is found in three areas within central Africa; Sierra Leone and southeastern Guinea east to southern Nigeria; Bioko Island and southern Cameroon eastward to Uganda, south to northern Angola and southern Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are omnivorous; feeding on berries and fruit, particularly mistletoe, but also take insects as it forages in deep cover.
