Hello dear friends,
"The heron and the mouse"
You could write a funny story about it, or a poem, but I'm not going to do that now. ;-)
Instead of that, here is something more current, namely about the raccoon, which has also been seen in our garden and is threatening to become a pest in our area.
Our neighbor installed a wildlife camera in his yard, which showed a whole family of raccoons.
If any is interested, here is a warning from our province of Limburg to the Minister of Nature and Agriculture from The Netherlands.
"If the raccoon plague is not tackled in Limburg, the rest of the Netherlands is also at risk. The animal, which is recognized by its salt and pepper-colored coat, adapts easily and can multiply and spread quickly. Previous control measures therefore only provided temporary relief. If no adjustments are made, the Procyon lotor (raccoon) will spread throughout the Netherlands."
Now I'll stop, because the heron's snack has long since been eaten.

What a nice photo capture! I see them catch fish around my area, haven't seen it catch a mouse before
Raccoons where I am in Canada are a bit of an unofficial mascot in the city. They are very well adapted throughout the whole city. They can multiple quickly and they are quite intelligent so I can see it spreading fast throughout Netherlands.
Have they decided how they want to handle the raccoons from spreading out of control in the Netherlands?
Thank you so much, Amanda! About the racoons: Especially in the province of Limburg (where I live) there is a lot of nuisance from the many raccoons. Walk-in traps and shooting: Experts and licensed hunters use specialized walk-in traps (catch cages) with bait to catch animals alive or use targeted shooting. Our province borders Germany, that's where they come from.
