Description
The Gartered Trogon population is distributed from central Mexico throughout Central America, Colombia, western Ecuador, northwestern Peru and the Maracaibo basin in Venezuela. It feeds on fruit and small invertebrates. It is possibly more frugivorous than other trogons (especially when it comes to mistletoe berries).
Sexes are dimorphic; look for yellow orbital ring on the males and the broken white eye ring on the female. The female also has a pied (with white) undertail that that isn't on the male.
The species appears to be on the decline due to the deforestation (by man) of its habitat.

You are a very talented naturalist! Unfortunately, the information you give us is often depressing.
While the information is often depressing, it's meant to be informative. The reason I do these birds is to build their fan clubs. If enough people start caring, there might be enough "will" to stop practices like wholesale deforestation.
It is hardly the information that is depressing. What depresses is the sense of helplessness. What can the average person do to help trogons, gartered or otherwise? Even politicians who maintain that they are aware of environmental issues prove unable to take effective and sustained measures. Photographs of Lake Mead should be quite sufficient to underline the crisis. Summers of wild fires and of unparalleled hurricanes and tornadoes are now annual events. Yet leaders the world over offer no more than verbal support and unfulfilled promises. They observe, and do nothing. Many deny that climate change occurs!
I appreciate your informative posts, vote green at every national election, and read the same disturbing news month after month after month. You do your part splendidly; I lack your manifest skills, appreciate your comprehensive and scholarly knowledge, and - naturally - feel helpless.

Very nice work. Very sad. One of so many species threatened by deforestation, including us.
Yet again, such brilliant colouring Ken. It's so sad that they're on the decline but glad it apparently is down to deforestation. Well (allegedly) all these firms are boasting about how many trees they plant each year there should be ten times as many trees as there are at present. Here's hoping!
