It's usually not the black mourning colors that get me (there are goth variants that do all white or mix a bit with steampunk, or other single colors like crimson). Though I do have a penchant for ebony tresses, it's the willingness to entertain a look that hearkens back to more prim-and-proper yesteryear, at least on the outside, which is a stark contrast to the "as much skin showing as possible" that started in the 70s and is still present even today. It's something different, something that tells modern convention "Hey, if you don't like it, then you can pretty much F- off."
