Description
Here's another species of swallowtail from my "Butterflies of the World v2: Swallowtails". Birdwings are the largest butterfly in the Swallowtail family, some with a wingspan of 19cm (7.5 inches).
Cairn's Birdwing is endemic to Queensland in Australia. They are found southwards from Mount Webb and Cooktown to Mackay in Queensland. It is also often seen in Cairns, hence its name. It is attracted to the flowers of lantana, hibiscus and bougainvillea in suburban gardens.
Males have a predominantly black upper wing with emerald green flashes, however the female lacks the green coloring, having a plain black upper wing with white patches. The female is the larger of the two sexes. The wingspan can be up to 5.9 inches (15 cm) in females, and 4.9 inches (12.5 cm) in males, making it the largest butterfly in Australia.
