Madeleine Forrester is well known to everyone in form 8W at St Tibb's High School for sometimes being a little on the liberal side of fantastical (i.e., she often makes things up just to impress others). She means well and is a nice girl but she does let her imagination run away with her at times. Friday morning, Period 1, and it is Cookery for 8W, where the class will be making a steamed syrup sponge cake. This morning, Maddie has been paired up with Claire Brompton and, while measuring out the ingredients, starts a convoluted tale about when her mother (an expert at cooking, apparently) took part in the Great British Bake-Off but the episode never got aired because of some unbelievable incident during filming. Of course, Maddie, that's why no one ever saw it. Ah-hah, oh yes, that's definitely why! Claire, meanwhile, listens to Maddie's amazing story and is quite entertained by it but doesn't believe a word of what she is hearing. It will be something amusing to tell the girls at the fountains when First Break comes around, though.
