One of the eagles from a new set I'm finishing up with a Blue-tongued Skink (from Lizards of the World v3). The Little Eagle is a native to most of Australia and frequents a variety of open and forested habitats, sparsely wooded foothills, scrub, timbered lands near water, and savanna, from sea level to 1,500 m. While globally it is considered "Not Threatened", it is listed as "Vulnerable" in NSW and ACT under the Threatened Species Conservation Act. The main threats to the species are the destruction and degradation of its foraging and breeding habitat causing it to come into competition with the larger and more dominant Wedge-tailed Eagle It is small for an eagle (as the name suggests) measuring 45-55 cm in length with a wingspan of 110-136 cm. It hunts rodents and small mammals (up to rabbit-size), lizards and birds. Males and females look alike but females tend to be 10% larger. The difference in size ensures that areas aren't over-hunted, with the female looking for larger prey while the male hunts smaller ones. This eagle is polymorphic with light or dark colorations (the "white" morph tends to be more dominant). John Gould described the Little Eagle in 1841. The distinctive pygmy eagle has long been considered a subspecies, but a 2009 genetic study shows it to be distinctive genetically and warranted the species status it holds today as Hieraaetus morphnoides.
