My grandmother had a similar wood burning stove in her basement kitchen, a remake of an Elmira. She used it every winter for heat and cooking right up to the 1990's when she passed away.

My goodness how incredibly lovely this place is. I have seen stoves similar to this and a spinning wheel before. Yet it is so lovely to see it in an original setting. Living like that was hard. Gorgeous image!

Both my grandmothers were perfectly familiar with stoves like these, Domestic skill was necessary. A smoldering fire had to be maintained overnight for cooking breakfast. So my father and uncles told me. Christmas dinner, indeed merely entertaining friends for dinner, was a formidable undertaking. It's no wonder my mother thought so much of being invited to donner. And no such thing as phoning out for chicken, Chinese, or pizza.
