Description
Here's my newly updated Japanese Cormorant from the Seabird v2 update I'm working on. He's chowing down a sardine from my NW fish set. The background are few a few Caspian gulls from Seabirds v2 and other gulls from Flock Formations. The background is a 3D model set based on the WatSai Market (sorry-- can't remember the vendor on this).
I hope to have both seabird set updates ready by the end of February... definitely March.
The Japanese Cormorant occurs on the Pacific coast of Asia, breeding on the extreme south-east coast of Russia down to North Korea and South Korea, including the central and northern coasts of Japan and the South Kuril Islands. During winter it can be found in small numbers off the eastern coast of China as far south as Taiwan.
It is one of the species of cormorant that has been domesticated by fishermen in a tradition known in Japan as “ukai” 鵜飼. The Nagara River's well-known fishing masters work with this particular species to catch ayu.

Thank you, Ken, for this image. In my mountains of the south of France, I rarely have opportunities to see cormorants, and particularly Japanese cormorants. But in winter seagulls can be seen flying over the river Garonne or over some of its tributaries, far more than 300 km from the sea.
I'm impressed that you achieved this effect with no post production. The slightly diminished contrast on the background gives a feel of depth without messing with depth of field settings. As others have said, the composition is very realistic. My hat's off to you, sir.
thanks... yes I gave it just a hint of "Amtosphere" and "DOF" (relatively high f-Stop)... just enough to make the Cormorant pop without blurring out all the detail of the scene. I wanted the gulls to be seen rifling through fruit baskets.

Awesome work with such detailed realism! I love that gull getting a little territorial over the food in the background. :) Each bird feels alive in this piece rather than just a background prop. I love that! Very well done!
