Description
I was browsing in an old bookshop in Kudanshita the other day — which for those of you unacquainted with Tokyo is the book village akin to Shaftesbury Avenue in London; and in a somewhat dusty and dank corner came across an old copy of Nada the Lily by H. Rider Haggard.
It was a tattered thing, the cover having seen better days and the inside was extensively annotated by different hands in both English and what I took to be Afrikaans, or Dutch.
Poor buy though it was it was graced by the original illustrations of Charles H. M. Kerr, but what really attracted me was an old photo I noticed tucked into the torn lining of the back cover.
Needless to say, after a bit of haggling, Kudan is a bit like Akihabara in that respect, I got it for next to nothing and have taken the liberty of scanning in the photo I found for you to take a look at, though it is very rough.
It is probably some Victorians jest, for the costume looks nothing like a real Zulu outfit. It is however quite old and says Natal 1826 under the name Nada. I find it most intriguing as Nada the Lily was reputedly the most beautiful maiden in Chaka's time.

excellent work and lovely little anecdote. If you have the time, you should get hold of a copy of "S" by Doug Dorst and JJ Abrams, it has something of that; a story being told through annotations and objects totally separate from the story in the book itself..
