The Palm cockatoo is endemic to New Guinea and Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. It can still be found near Sorong, West Papua, Indonesia, where it is sometimes seen in trees along the roads. It is chiefly arboreal feeder, taking seeds, fruits, nuts, berries and buds from a wide variety of plants. It likes Pandanus palm nuts. Territorial pairs are resident in a patch of forest that provides several nest-hollows. Pairs may associate together in flocks of up to 30 birds when foraging outside the territory wherever fruiting trees are available. They return to roost in their territories at night, where they are intolerant of other pairs. This species was previously considered “Near Threatened” but was moved to "Least Concern". The overall population is in decline. It is a much sought after bird for the aviary trade, which is illegal in Australia. There is difficulty in determining caught birds from New Guinea (where it is still legal) from Australian birds. Captive-breeding programs in Europe and North America have been set-up.
