Description

OK – I suppose I should provide a bit of explanation for this…..uh……… magnificent attempt to steal Picasso’s place in the echelons of fine art…. I am in the process of upgrading one of my on-line markets for my artwork (I’m not promoting, BTW, so please don’t slap my hands, Rendo. 😂 My vines have tender grapes..). In so doing, I have been spending a serious amount of time researching what may or may not sell. And what I have found is that – strangely enough – sexy pinups of foxy secret agent babes isn’t what sells. No one seems to want to decorate walls, mugs or T-shirts with babes crusin’ around in ’58 Impalas. Nope. What seems to sell like hotcakes? Glad you asked. People seem to want cutesy, cartoony kitty-cats that look like they were drawn by a 4-year-old with a #2 pencil on a Big Chief tablet. Who knew? Here, I’ve had it wrong all these years. Sheesh. Hot, sexy babes, photos of wonderful locations, fantasy and sci-fi… Jeeze – what the hell was I thinking? Silly me. Well, it’s time to grab the trusty ballpoint pen, and a sheet of paper from the recycle bin and get my butt to work! So waddya think? Isn’t this just the most amazing thing you’ve seen today? I mean sheesh.. This masterwork took 15 or so minutes of slaving away, sweat dripping from my forehead, and my hands trembling with the excitement of creating such an indescribable piece of sh….. uh…… I mean artwork! Then again, it could have been that 8th cup of coffee… God, I need help! 🤣 OK, before anyone calls the men with the funny long-sleeved jackets….. I’m just kidding, well maybe… But then someone had to give Mark (anahata.c) a little competition… 😆 My next post will be back to our regularly scheduled programming… EDIT: 12-27-19: OMG! I can't believe Jay (WP Guru) used this for a movie poster in his livestream today! 🤣😆 This is hilarious - I'm still laughing! I hope the T.N.A. I was believing you - then again you may still be right about what sells lol Cool sketch - now one of my sketches would look like it was made by a 4 year old - I've seen some our your digital paintings and I know you are a good artist 😄 Nicely done RodS!

I'm sure your 'sh...' sentence would have finished as 'shear viewing pleasure?' LOL! What a marvelous talent you have displayed and a supremely lucrative art market as well! I'm glad you found you niche! Congratulations! What an amazing work of art for the ages! Well done!

yupp.. even the TOP standard media Pinup artists sell not well anymore.. many of them that are left have gone to movie tribute or damn super hero crap.. that done in standard medium so folks can buy an original sell.. prints of any real art don't sell any more hardly at all.. thank the internet! Too easy to "steal one and make your own print.. why I have not and will not waste my time doing any standard medium any more for many years. and as an aside.. the only folks interested in 3D art are others that mess around in 3d art.. and they will comment at places like this.. of how good they think something is.. but.. they never have and never will purchase others (other 3d artists) prints.. If they see and idea they like they are most likely just going to try and reproduce something similar themselves. the sad state graphic of Art now a days Only one way to make any $$$ in 3d and that's to put up with all the garbage involved in being a vender to all the others who can't model but want to be a 3d artist

If you're in this for the money. . . you really do need help (LOL). Don't quit your day job. . . oh, I'm sorry, you are retired, correct? All kidding aside, Rod, your point is well taken. Frankly, I can't wait until I'm dead. . . Then my stuff will be worth millions (LOL). 😁

THIS needs to hang in an upscale gallery, Like Manhatten or Soho! I see a lot of work went into the creation of this masterpiece.

Excellent work, Rod.

The most upscale this will likely get is Sid's Garage... 🤣😂

Looks amazing, Rod!! This should be hanging on a wall... in some asylum... where noone bothers to straighten up the pictures hanging on the wall. Keep up the awesome work!

lol, great freaked-out and slightly mangey Kat! He/she's slightly shocked, I think, that he's being viewed by the world. Love this guy's expression, and hairiness, and those long cat's nails. Plus your annotations lol. (Can I call them that?) And I notice that you call this image "a piece of sh.....", and then call it a competition with ME (lol): THANKS JACK! I appreciate the COMPLIMENT, lol!!! (Did RS just call me a piece of sh....???) Seriously, no child could draw this, it's too complex and characterful...you can post these gems anytime. They show yet another side to your multi-talent.

As for what sells on cups, pillows, etc: I've never been good at predicting markets; but you know, part of it could be that people want designs on pillows that, however bold, stay in the 'background'; and it may be that your images are just too rich and complex to sit well on a mug or pillow. Just my thought. Mugs usually have simpler designs, and pillows often have patterns: Maybe your work is too multi-layered, with many hues and lights, etc, to feel comfortable on a throw pillow---as opposed to in full image, where they of course shine. In any case, I'm sorry they didn't take off the way you wanted (on household objects). Hell, look at greeting cards: Cartoons swept that market years back! Boynton, Larson, even Schulz (of Peanuts). And when you consider how cats-playing-the-piano swept YouTube, one can understand how potent they are. When I designed cards years back, paintings didn't go over nearly as well as designs or simpler drawings. Maybe that applies to pillows, I don't know. But hey, a great marketer I've never been, so I'm just musing. I just wish you everything you can get, as your talent deserves it.

Oh, and I love the watermark! (Picasso would sign a cartoon on a napkin, and, voila: It was worth millions! May it happen to you, Sir R.) Delightful upload. Now feed that cat, it's NOT having a good day...

Lol...this is great and a good laugh. You are so multi-talented, Rod.

The world is so bizarre any more, it's hard to tell what 'the buying public' wants. And lets face it, most artists are not marketeers - they're artists. So do it all, do what you want. It's all good.

That is one cool piece of work Rod. Indeed different my friend. Unlike you I'm not multi talented, could never ever draw worth a hoot but your work is outstanding. Hope the very best bro.

Well, Rod, it does look like you've found your niche in the world of "art." Your kitty extraordinaire shall go down in history... Kidding aside, this is such a fun piece, and actually quite well done...Thanks for the laugh--heaven knows these days not much laughing going around...

I have no clue what appeals to people at any given time. Even here, with my own images, things I'm proud of barely get comments/ratings but things that are eh... get loads of attention. Go figure. Your kitty is funny and one of a kind and maybe that's why people react to hand-drawn things? I dunno, maybe we all need to save childhood artwork.

Well Rod, this one definitely gave me a smile. As for what sells, that is hard to say from time to time. What everyone keeps telling me is finding the right audience for your work is key.

very humorous and better than some posted here in the past. I was stupid and volunteered to replace the rope on a cat scratch post thing. I wanted to take it home to work on a table, but 2 were voting against me. wanted the piece of junk fixed there. like I was going to let Bodie have his way with it. at 75 it is much harder working on concrete and trying to wind the ropes tightly while on the floor

RodS

10:57PM | Sat, 28 December 2019

It always bugs the hell out of me when you volunteer your time and skills, and people start making all kinds of demands, and making it harder for you to do what you volunteered to do. I've had that happen several times - and in each case that was the last time...

At 71, I don't even like crawling around on the floor to connect stuff to computers.. 😜
