Description
Seventeen miles east of Cloudcroft, the even smaller, unincorporated community of Mayhill is located at an elevation of 6,581-ft (~2,000 m), also on U.S. Highway 82. Mayhill also is in the Sacramento Mountains and is surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest. Mayhill is almost entirely residential, consisting mostly of vacation homes and summer cabins. Mayhill has a post office, a convenience store/gas station, and a restaurant/small hotel.
Mayhills claim to fame is that in 1855, in the immediate vicinity of this community, Captain Henry W. Stanton of the U.S. Army, for whom Fort Stanton was named, lost his life in a skirmish with the Mescalero Apaches. For several weeks, soldiers commanded by Stanton and Capt. Richard S. Ewell, were in pursuit of Indians who had stolen livestock from the Pecos River area south of Anton Chico. In the final confrontation lives were lost on both sides.
