This whimsical artwork of a mama giraffe bending down to receive a kiss from her baby is a mixed medium work created in Photoshop, combining photo references and painting techniques. Special thanks to Denise (Mrs Ratbag) for the use of her delightful photo.

Starting from where I left off last time (though there are images before that which I haven't commented on, as well...I'll try to get images from all sides, if I can...), this is an amazingly multi-layered work. I don't mean layers ala photoshop, but visual and emotional layers. As a picture of a mother giraffe leaning into her child---and the child craning way up to meet its mother---it's very expressive; and your painting and use of light, texture, etc, emphasize the meeting---the 'stretch'---very powerfully. I don't know the reference photograph (though if it's from Denise, it has to be masterful), but if her picture includes more than this, you've cropped it to zero-us in on the meeting of these two. And the child's tongue, licking its mother, shows that this isn't just a child looking for nurturance, but giving it.
But then, there's your painting. The fur and mane of the mother (maybe coat's the right word, instead of "fur") is painted very painterly, with brushwork that gives a quiet pulse to her coat. And you've used peach hues throughout (mixed with the blacks and orange-browns, etc) which are beautiful. But her and her child's face are highly electrified, highly fluid flows of energy. You've rendered the child's face as compendium of cellular sections, each with its own energy and current. As is the mother's...And you haven't 'beautified' them, making them 'photogenic': Instead, both have bulbous and overlapping forms; in fact, in parts, they look like a very active terrain which has been beset by eons of geologic drama and shift. And the manes---on their heads---are a series of rushing currents, like lots of little rivers flowing in tandem with each other. This is the 'carol' touch. Maybe I should call it the carol waterfall.
A very vital portrait of these two heads and faces, which you've backed with a painterly background that is almost like textured glass---it really looks that way; and it's filled with the same hues you have in the giraffes. Powerful stuff, Carol, a great kiss animated by primal energies galore. If Michelangelo's "creation of Adam" (or whatever it's called)---where god reaches out for adam, and there's an implied spark between them---has implied electricity, this has real electricity. The meeting point between them is powerful, while the whole animals radiate with powerful energies. A real Carol interpretation; I don't know any artist in my life who would have interpreted this this way, and revealed so much energy from within it.
