Description
These are the Pancake Rocks of Punakaiki in Paparua National Park, South Island, New Zealand.
Scientists know the rocks are limestone, formed under the sea 35 million years ago by fragments of marine organisms. What they cannot quite fathom is precisely how the rocks came to be in layers.

the earth is amazing. thanks for sharing this. superb photography
wonderful find!
They may have been exaggerating the mystery a bit. Limestone layering is quite common, as you know. Here's a paragraph from a NZ geology page:
"Pancake Rocks has irregular chasms and ridges, typical of limestone country. The layers of resistant bands of limestone are separated by softer, thin, mud-rich layers. This type of layering, found in limestones worldwide, is called stylobedding. Although the origin of stylobedding has been debated, it is mostly agreed that this layering is not original bedding, but a secondary feature caused by compaction. Erosion by water, wind and salt spray near the coast has etched out the stylobedding, forming the distinctive ‘pancakes’."
It's a great picture! Those layers are beautifully distinct.
Fantastic formations, great capture!

Oooooo, glad you showed us this. The erosion patterns remind me of The Badlands in South Dakota. All my geology knowledge is now whizzing around in my head:)
