Description
Taken at the McMenamins Edgefield complex in Troutdale. Most people living in the Pacific Northwest are familiar with the McMenamins name & at least some of their properties. Here's some information about the McMenamins & this specific location & shot which I pulled from both Wikipedia & the McMenamins own site:
"McMenamins is a family-owned business operating 54 distinct brewpubs, breweries, music venues, historic hotels, and theater pubs in the Pacific Northwest. Founded by brothers Mike and Brian McMenamin with a single Portland neighborhood pub in 1983, McMenamins today includes 46 Oregon and eight Washington properties, 18 on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the Brewers Association, McMenamins is one of the top 50 largest craft breweries in the United States.
Historic Edgefield, built in 1911 as the county poor farm, is a McMenamins destination resort in the Pacific Northwest.
Poor farms were county- or town-run residences where paupers (mainly elderly and disabled people) were supported at public expense. The farms declined in use after the Social Security Act took effect in 1935, with most disappearing completely by about 1950.
Most were working farms that produced at least some of the produce, grain, and livestock they consumed. Residents were expected to provide labor to the extent that their health would allow, both in the fields and in providing housekeeping and care for other residents. Rules were strict and accommodations minimal.
In 1927, the Poor Farm at Edgefield was declared a firetrap because it lacked fire
detection and deterrent systems. To remedy the situation, this water tower
was erected to supply a gravity-powered sprinkler system throughout the
Main Lodge. The tower is now empty, yet supports hop vines that stretch
skyward during summer."

Never knew the story of the poor farms...made perfect sense back-in-the-day. As for this water tower...it looks like it has a very recent coat of paint. I always like the POV you've chosen, particularly when there is a blue sky backdrop. Wonder how many kids have scaled those heights after dark over the years:-)
Lovely shot, but Troutdale sounds 'a bit fishy'!
amazing and contrastful capture against the sky and also interesting info 😃
Fascinating narrative! I'm glad it has found a second use.
Superb capture my friend. God bless.
I had heard of poor farms, but didn't know what it was all about. Thanks for the interesting information! I've heard of McMenamins, of course, but since I'm not a beer drinker, I haven't paid much attention. I never realized how big they'd gotten! Love the water tower, btw. The pov is perfect!
