Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve
Alamosa, Colorado

This is a shot of the valley, the dunes, and the surrounding mountains. Oh ... and apparently you can rent this accommodation when you visit. I don't recall seeing this, but hey ... there's the picture right there! LOL! Well, it WAS four years ago. I can't remember everything.
The highest dune is about 700 feet, as I recall.
The mountains are around 14,000 feet, but the valley floor is at about 7,500 feet, so you're looking at a topographical prominence of something less than 7,000 feet.
It's a very cool place, if you get a chance to visit southern Colorado.

Bill and I are packing suitcases and closing up our place in Texas, getting ready to head north for the summer.
We'll fly from Texas to Virginia on Tuesday, and will stay with friends in the Shenandoah Valley for about 10 days. On April 15th we head to Washington, DC for 2-1/2 weeks, then to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for a few days. We'll arrive back in the Seattle area on May 6th. I'll be around off and on while we're traveling, and I hope to have some interesting pictures to show you!

Its great to see two people who know how to do retirement right. This is an impressive landscape. I get the overwhelming impression of a giant's sandbox. And zoom helps since I thought the building was an old boxcar.

Great capture Tara. I went the Great Sand Dunes in November 1986 and the Sangre de Cristo Mts. had a lot of snow on them.
OH What a beautiful sight. And very strange to such one as me. First mountains, then a layer of dunes and then a prairie.. and that house. I could have sworn it was from an old train :) Awesome shot, Tara. :D
Well, this is really lovely, particularly as the mountains are distant enough not to cast a shadow on the building! The acceptable face of mountain scenery, hehe!

I'm one of a few who thought "boxcar" when I saw this. Your tones in the dunes and in the mountains are soft and flowing. A very fluid texture; and very muted tones, adding to their softness. The sky too is soft; like thought. And the mid and foreground is real western-prairie stuff, with dark coloration and all that textured brown grass. And the "duplex" sits there like an abandoned RR car, in deep shadow, looking melancholy and bereft. It adds a whole other dimension to the shot. Long sweeping forms here, beautiful muted hues, and a dark but clear capture of an old building. The duplex makes this seem even more desolate by its inclusion. (Desolate sounds bad, but it just means "totally alone": solate = solace: Just one letter's difference.) And that's not bad when the landscape is as soft and sweeping as this. Beautiful image, Tara. I just got the ebot.
