from a paperbark tree, or a cajuput tree, just to be technical, captured back on 6/20/08, somewhere around the neighborhood.

A line of these must look great at dawn/sunset when the light hitting them at an angle.
It really looks like the trunk is becoming undone by the seam! Wonderful tree with these layers and layers of thin bark.

I didn't realize until just now that you put these up right before your first maelstrom; and they really are a fine lead-in. These ARE maelstroms. Wonderful capture of the multi-layered furls and curls peeling off of each other. And that big opening inside (in shot 1). And the sight of the bark seen side-on, in both shots, so we can see the layers. And, in the 2d shot, the beige tones as well as the whites. Terrific shots of this most unusual bark. The top one looks like it's undressing for us.
