Description
A simple slab from the tomb of a monk. Just a simple scratched image which is still a nice bit of work. Sort of a budget brass.
Folks, I make a BIG boo-boo. Somehow, somewhere while we were in this section I saw/heard/read/dreamt that this was (or something in it was) from a Spanish chapel. Looking at the website to refresh my memory I found:
"Langon Chapel (The Cloisters)
Parts of this chapel-like gallery were constructed with twelfth-century limestone blocks from the church of Notre-Dame-du-Bourg at Langon, near Bordeaux. Seven capitals from the crossing and choir of Langon are installed in the gallery, all of them decorated with carved human heads or figures in high relief. The gallery is entered through a pair of monumental twelfth-century doors from the region of the Pyrenees. Also exhibited here are twelfth-century sculptures from Burgundy in wood and limestone."
Well duh, I can look at Spanish heraldry til the vacas come home and be in the wrong country by a few klicks. Eh?
I don't want to give everything away (IOW if in the area do pay a personal visit and continue the discoveries), and we have a lot more artifacts to look at, so let's bid ,adieu to the Langon Chapel and see what else is in this remarkable building. We've hardly touched it.
One thing about The Cloisters, it's comparatively intimate. I believe you can do justice to viewing the collections in a single day... its more famous big brother would require a week minimum (IMO) to even consider saying the same. Also the feel varies from gallery to gallery here. The Met is a Museum; this just feels different.
Enjoy; thanks for viewing.

NIce of you to correct yourself for those of us who don't know the history here. Nice photo. Monks usually had very ascetic tombs. Many had only a wooden head piece which dissolved with time. This fellow was probably of some importance since he has a carved stone lid, though the engraved image is sparse in its workings. Do note the rather realistic face. Keep up the good work. :-)
I too think the monk was important. No matter where the Chapel is I have loved the photo's.
Very cool new information and wonderful capture of this tomb
beautiful
