Well, there's equality and there's equality. You should not confuse, say, the fact that only landowners could vote with the legal attacks on gays. The idea was that the right to vote was earned, like the ability to own a Ferrari. If you didn't own land and manage a business/farm you did not have the experience necessary to cast an educated and responsible vote. The attacks on gays are irrational, political, and personal. They are also defensive. The people attacking gays feel themselves under attack and are striking out, almost randomly, at anyone they can.
America's sense of "equality" has always been irrational at best. It's not about the vote. It's about a country that claims on one hand that all of its citizenry is equal under the law and on the other does a helluva lot to make sure that equality never happens.
Maybe we will get it right eventually. Hopefully before we all croak. Excellent work!
